Field Day might have downsized from two days to one, but this year’s bill is about as brimming with brilliant music. Taking place on June 3rd at London’s Victoria Park, the all-dayer promises rare festival appearances from Aphex Twin and Flying Lotus, the return of Field Day-favourites Run The Jewels and John Cooper Clarke, plus the hottest up-and-coming talent from the worlds of dance, indie and hip hop. Flying Lotus
FlyLo hit the headlines earlier this year when he premiered his hallucinogenic video-nasty ‘Kuso’ at Sundance Festival, provoking mass walk outs. You’ll be relieved to hear he’ll be sticking to music at Field Day, but that doesn’t mean punters can’t expect a spectacle. Quite the contrary, in fact: judging by previous performances you should steel your synapses for an audiovisual extravaganza that pairs his jazzy, hip hop-influenced compositions with mind-melting animations.
HMLTD
Bored of bands that blend in? Meet HMLTD – pronounced Happy Meal Ltd – the London-based six-piece that the NME have tipped as “the UK’s most thrilling new band”. Combining smeared lipstick, ludicrous outfits and fake gore, with songs smooshing together elements of art-punk, glam, noise-rock and hip hop, they’ve already earned themselves a legendary live reputation for their Ziggy Stardust-meets-Birthday Party-era Nick Cave antics.
Slowdive
In an era where it’s become acceptable for heritage acts to cynically trade off nostalgia, Slowdive are a breath of fresh air. After a two-decade hiatus, the Reading-formed shoegazers have just released their first studio album in 22 years, and it’s one of the best rock records of 2017 so far. See them perform the exquisite dream-pop from it on Crack Magazine's stage, alongside back catalogue classics from Souvlaki , Pygamalion and Just For A Day.
