7digital What we said: While carefully-selected comparisons can provide a helpful shorthand for describing new artists, reiterate those likenesses too often and they can become constrictive, and start to undermine the artist’s originality. Nadine Shah must know this all too well, having been beleaguered by comparisons to Nick Cave and PJ Harvey on her 2013 debut, Love Your Dum And Mad. Hopefully, this follow-up should put that right. Though every bit as beautifully-wintry in tone, Fast Food also feels more cohesive than its predecessor, assisted by a thematic strand that finds the Whitburn-born singer-songwriter variously venting about and mourning over past relationships. Predictably, Shah’s husky tones remain mesmeric, and help assert her status as one of Britain’s most distinctive and compelling storytellers.
