7digital What we said: Charles McCloud Duff aka Matrixxman is something of an unsung hero. This may be his first full length, but the San Francisco producer has churned out a string of EPs on reputable imprints Dekmantel and Unknown to the Unknown. Known for his versatility, Duff’s discography captures his vast palette of sounds, releasing ghetto-house with frequent collaborator Vin Sol, whilst also producing for rapper Le1f as . Perhaps surprisingly, therefore, his debut is clearly focused upon a single dark, moody timbre. With its pervading minimalism and foreboding subtleties, the record’s release on Ghostly International is certainly fitting, with gestures towards the dancefloor appearing in the urging techno stomp of ‘Switchblade’. With last year’s Amulet EP released on Ghostly’s sister label Spectral Sound, McCloud sits comfortably within the electronic niche of these imprints, yet the album establishes his ability to weave a narrative of his own.
