7digital What we said: There must be something in the water in Hampshire. How else to explain the emergence of two of the most precociously talented singer-songwriter talents within the last decade? Laura Marling’s work is well known, but Marika Hackman remains an enigmatic delight. Mixing elements of pastoral folk, sparse electronica and a sprinkling of grunge, We Slept At Last is brimming with self-assuredness. The gentle arrangements are underpinned by surprisingly dark lyrical themes full of naturalistic imagery which imbues the album with a melancholic elegance. The contrast of tone and theme runs throughout the album; it’s a captivating combination.
