7digital What we said: Alongside stars like Janelle Monáe, Tove Lo and Beyoncé, alt-pop purveyor Halsey has been instrumental in proving that concept albums are no longer the preserve of prog bands or po-faced indie-rockers. On her 2015 debut Badlands, the New Jersey native summoned a post-apocalyptic landscape as a metaphor for her troubled mental state, and for this follow-up she spins a narrative of two lovers trapped in a “limbo-like realm”. The impassioned subject matter proves a pretty ideal match for the 22-year-old’s emo-influenced vocals, and there’s some stellar songwriting courtesy of Greg Kurstin, Cashmere Cat, The Weeknd and Sia. Overall, hopeless fountain kingdom feels like a step up.
