7digital What we said: There aren’t many British rock bands capable of dreaming up a double album as audacious as Opposites, let alone taking it to the top of the charts. The question is, where could Biffy Clyro go next to ensure the follow-up didn’t feel like a colossal comedown? As frontman Simon Neil explained to the NME earlier this year, the answer was to “come out fighting”, by “embracing the chaos”. In practical terms, this meant heading to LA to work with Muse and My Chemical Romance-producer Rich Costey, and swapping the strings, brass and bagpipes for a more back-to-basics approach. The gamble largely pays off, and while there still aren’t many rough edges on Ellipsis, the ferocity of cuts like ‘Wolves of Winter’ and ‘Animal Style’ should keep their notoriously loyal fanbase engrossed.
